Fishing in Moonfrost is a three-part action: place the float inside a fishable patch near a visible shadow, respond when the float dives, then guide the hooked fish inside the moving target area until the catch completes. Do not mash the action during the bite or reel. Most failed attempts come from casting outside the active water, reacting before or after the hook window, or adding too much tension while the fish is outside the target.
Get the rod through Ronen’s route
Current Early Access documentation places the Fishing Rod introduction on the Mountain with Ronen. Follow his fishing objective until the blueprint is available, then craft the rod at the Tools Workbench. A current independent guide records a level 5 requirement and a cost of 5 Birchwood plus 5 Stone. Treat those numbers as an October 2026 public-build observation; if your recipe panel differs after an update, the panel is authoritative.
The same record describes the launch rod as having limited uses and each cast consuming stamina. That means a cast outside the fishing spot is not harmless. Carry food for a longer trip, keep basic replacement materials in storage, and leave enough bag space that a successful catch does not spill beside you.

Trip preparationChoose water
Look for moving fish shadows inside an active fishing patch rather than casting into any decorative water.
Visible targetCast, hook, and land a fish
Equip the rod and stand close enough to the active water. With keyboard and mouse, current documentation describes holding the primary action to charge distance and releasing to cast. Aim beside a moving shadow, not at an empty corner of the pool. If the game tells you to move closer or the float lands outside the active patch, reposition before spending another cast.
After a fish approaches, wait for the float to dip and the bite cue to appear. Press the shown action once during that cue. Pressing early cancels the opportunity; reacting after the window lets the fish go. Larger shadows are reported to offer a shorter response window, so watch the float rather than the fish once it begins nibbling.
During the reel, move the pointer or active control so the fish stays within the target circle. Progress builds while it is contained and slips when it escapes. Use a tug only to correct a fish that is pulling away; rapid repeated tugs add tension and can snap the line. Smooth steering with occasional correction is safer than treating the reel as a clicking contest.
Controller labels depend on the detected device and Steam Input configuration. Follow the on-screen action rather than translating “left click” to a guessed button. If the prompt and action disagree, open Steam Input, restore an official or known-good layout, then test one cast before changing more bindings.
Choose a fishing region
Current community mapping documents fishable water on the Farm, five Mountain lakes, the Cemetery, and both river and pond water in the Neighbourhood. Those regions do not share one universal fish list. The Mountain is the natural starting point because it is tied to Ronen and the rod introduction; the later regions are useful when a request, recipe, or collection points to a species not appearing in your current water.
Use the Farm river for a quick session near home. Use Mountain lakes when progressing Ronen’s requests or searching across several nearby pools. Treat Cemetery catches as their own group, especially when a potion or collection entry points there. In the Neighbourhood, inspect both river and pond fishing spots rather than assuming nearby water has the same pool.
The independent launch guide lists 18 catchable fish across those areas, while the in-game Fish collection is described as having 17 entries because one unusual catch is outside that album. Counts and pools are highly version-sensitive. This page deliberately avoids publishing probability percentages as permanent truth; use visible shadows and a current detailed index when a specific fish matters.
Decide what to keep
Keep a fish when it is named by an active Ronen, Walter, Alba, FHA, cooking, potion, or collection objective. Keep at least one unfamiliar species until its uses are known. Sell common extras only after protecting those hand-ins. A raw sale can be less valuable than a dish or request, and a hard-to-reach fish costs travel time even when its coin price looks modest.
If inventory is nearly full, clear space before hooking another fish. Community observations report that a catch can drop on the ground when the bag has no room. That is recoverable if you notice it, but easy to lose when leaving the map or moving straight into another cast.
For cooking, confirm the exact species and any crop-quality requirement before processing. For collections, verify that the catch registered when it entered inventory. For requests, read the quantity and whether the character wants raw fish or a cooked dish; those are different resource calculations.
Fix the failure you actually saw
If the float never attracts a fish, confirm it landed inside the spot and near a shadow. If the attempt ends before the dive, you are hooking too early. If the cue disappears, react to the float rather than waiting for another animation. If the fish escapes during the reel, prioritize keeping it in the circle. If the line snaps, reduce the tug rate and allow tension to fall.
If no shadows remain, move to another spot or continue the surrounding objective. Current guides describe replenishment over time, but a patch may change rates or conditions. If the rod cannot be crafted, inspect your level, blueprint, workstation, materials, and quest stage in that order. If only controller fishing fails, test keyboard and mouse once; that isolates an input-layout problem from a fishing-state problem.
Fishing is most efficient when attached to a purpose: one request, one collection gap, one recipe, or one region survey. Return to Farming for the wider daily loop, or use Database when you need an evidence-labeled record for a named fish or ingredient.
